“A mother is the truest friend we have, when trials heavy and sudden, fall upon us; when adversity takes the place of prosperity; when friends who rejoice with us in our sunshine desert us; when trouble thickens around us, still will she cling to us, and endeavor by her kind precepts and counsels to dissipate the clouds of darkness, and cause peace to return to our hearts.” ~ Washington Irving
It is unfortunate that the wheels of consumerism have ground to dust our true regards and admiration of our mothers. Motherhood is not a once a year endeavor nor should it be honored as such. Many women around the world are barely aware of this American made "holiday" and yet their impact on their families', societies' and the world is incalculable.
Even mothers who live in America may participate in this day marked as a remembrance though they are fortunate to have children, husbands and friends who acknowledge on a regular basis all they do and the profound impact it has on their lives.
Enjoy the day but do not diminish it with trite cards, empty sentiment or soon to wilt flowers. Remember that the most enduring gift that a mother gives her child is often unseen, unheard, and unnoticed - her prayers.
"I remember my mother's prayers and they have always followed me. They have clung to me all my life." ~ Abraham Lincoln
